When Madonna injured her foot in January 2014 during a ski trip, everybody thought she will be having some time off especially after being photographed walking with crutches.
But just a month later, Madonna has posted on Instagram letting everyone know that she is back doing her exercise routines despite her foot injury which is a bruised bone. For the opening of Madonna’s Hard Candy studio, the iconic singer led an exercise class with her trainer Nicole Winhoffer.
After the exercise class, Madonna let her fans know that she has to continue making a living despite having an injury and she has placed her injured foot in the ice bath after her workout.
What is a bruised bone?
A bruised bone involves bleeding inside a bone caused by a damaged bone marrow. A bruised bone is usually caused by trauma and can be very painful, making daily activities hard to do.
How is a bruised bone treated?
A bruised bone is initially treated by resting the injured area to allow the bone tissue to regenerate without further damaging the injured part. To allow the injured area to recover properly without being stressed, crutches might be required for walking. In upper body bone bruises, the doctor might require the patient to wear a brace, cast, or a sling.
Bone bruises can also be very painful. Immediately after getting injured, an ice pack or ice bath is needed for the inured area to decrease the pain and swelling. After 2 to 3 days of applying cold to the injured area, heat can also be applied to decrease pain and accelerate the healing process.
If the bruised bone continues to swell, the doctor may prescribe the patient to take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. To prevent further swelling, the affected area could also be raised above the heart level.
Warning signs
Patients with bruised bones should contact their doctor or foot specialist if the pain and swelling increase during the recovery process. Blood clotting, redness, pain, inflammation with warm skin should also be immediately reported to a doctor or a foot specialist.
Recovery time
The recovery time for a bruised bone may take several weeks and even several months. In Madonna’s case, it is clear that her bruised bone has not completely healed yet which is evident by her use of crutches and the ice bath after her exercise class. It is not recommended to use the affected area for strenuous activities if the injured area has not fully recovered yet.
